    • Obituary: 13 Aug 1926, The Don Dorrigo Gazette and Guy Fawkes Advocate, NSW; MR. JOHN McFADYEN With an almost tragic suddenness on Monday niorning death claimed for its own Mr. John McFadyen, one of the few remaining members of that grand old band of pioneers who blazed the trail of progress, settlement and development in this tertne district of the Bellinger River (says the "Northern Courier"). The late Mr. McFadyen arose at the usual hour on Monday and moved about the bouse and farm as was his wont, appearing to be quite in his customary state, of health. Some time after breakfast he went into the house and said to Mrs. McFayden that he had a slight pain in his chest which he thought was indigestion. On his wife's suggestion he took a cup of hot water and drank it, going out to lie on the sofa in the sun on the back verandah afterwards. A few minutes after two men called at the house to see Mr. McFayden on a matter of business, and seeing him lying on the couch, apparently asleep, they called out to him, so as not to startle him. Mrs. McFayden heard the men call and went out to inform Mr. McFadyen, but was shocked beyond measure to discover that Mr. McFayden had passed away. The late Mr. McFadyen is survived by his wife and a family of three sons and four daughters. The sons are Messrs. E. N. D., J. G., and A. R. McFayden, all of Gleniffer, and the daughters, Mesdames R. Fuller (Gleniffer), J. Hillier (Bellingen), J. S. Campbell (Dorrigo), and H. Dale (Bellingen). Two sons, Messrs. C. J. and M. J. McFadyen, pre-deceased him. The funeral took place on Tuesday and was largely attended. The Don Dorrigo Gazette and Guy Fawkes Advocate, NSW, Friday, 13 August 1926

John died accidently from the overturning of a sulky.
(New South Wales, Australia, Registers of Coroners' Inquests, 1821-1937)

    DRIVING FATALITY.
    SYDNEY, Tuesday.
While John Keogh, a farmer, was driving with his wife and 13-year-old son, in a sulky near Bellingen the vehicle over
turned into the river. Keogh was killed, and Mrs. Keogh sustained very severe injuries, which may prove fatal. The boy escaped unhurt.
Northern Star, Lismore, NSW., Wednesday, 23 December 1908

    THE INQUEST.
On Monday at Bellingen Court House, Mr. H. Boultwood, J.P., held a coronial enquiry into the cause of the death of John James Keogh on the South Arm road on Sunday, 20th inst.
Senior-constable Stein said that at 3.15 p.m on Sunday in consequence of a report brought to him he went to Mr. N. Jackson's place near South Arm road between , 11 and 12 miles from Bellingen. There he saw a dead body, which he recognised as that of John James Keogh. Examined the body and found no marks of abraisions or bruises. Went from
Jackson;s houses to a point on the road about 60 or 70 yards below, and saw a sulky on the side of a bank some distance below the road. Also saw wheelmarks where the
sulky had left the road. The road was on a steep grade and very narrow, There was no brake on the sulky. Formed the opinion from the surroundings that deceased had been driving the sulky, which had accidentally gone over the bank and capsized. Had known Keogh for 18 months. Deceased had been all that time in very delicate health.
Dr. Griffiths said that in answer to a call on Sunday he had gone to a place on the South Arm Road. There saw the body of deceased lying on a slope below a steep cutting on the road. A sulky was lying beside him. He appeared to have fallen from it. The time was about 8.30 p.m. The body was quite dead. It showed no external marks of injury,
but the neck was broken. Was of opinion that deceased had fallen on his head. The cause of death was dislocation of the cervical vertebrae. Should think he was killed instantaneously, and that it could not have been possible for him to speak after the fall. If he had spoken, that
showed that the pressure on the spinal cord had not been sufficient to cause immediate death.
William Henry Keogh, aged, 12 years and 9 months, said that he lived at Upper South Arm. Was in Bellingen with his parents on Saturday, and stayed that night at Mr. Wheeler's. His father, mother, and imself drove out towards home on Sunday morning. His father the, deceased, was driving. When in the cutting something made a noise
among the growth near the horse's head, and it shied. One wheel went over the bank and the sulky capsized, turning right over twice. Was himself thrown beyond a log. Got
up unhurt, and found the horse on its feet struggling to return to the road. It was dragging the sulky towards where his mother was lying. Seized the reins and turned the horse
away. Helped his mother to her feet, and she then held the horse while he went to his father, who was lying on his back farther down. His father said, "Don't worry ; I'm not hurt.". Then ran to Jackson''s house and called, for help. Mr. Haslingden who was there came back with. him. Mr. Haslingden put water on his father's face and gave him some
wine. His father did not speak. Mr. Haslingden went to the relief of his mother, who had fainted, and then went to seek help. His father moaned for about 10 minutes and
then stopped. Thought he died then.
It was the second time his father had driven the horse which went perfectly quietly till the time of the accident. His father had been ill for a long time. Had been in the hopital not long ago. Had had chloroform and got all his teeth removed the day before the accident. Had some provisions in the sulky, including a bottle of wine. His father was quite sober. Had never known him to be the worse of drink.
Haslingden A. Haslingden, a selector, living at present on N. Jackson's farm, Upper South Arm, corroborated the evidence of the former winess regarding the part taken by
himself; The time was shortly after 11 o'clock. Found the bottle of wine on the grass, where it had evidently been thrown from the sulky. Mrs. Keogh was standing at the horse's head when he first came. She collapsed while he was attending to her husband. Did what he could, took the horse from the sulky, went first to neighbours for assistance, and then rode into Bellingen for a doctor. Deceased was alive when he came on the scene. He tried to speak, but
could only gasp. He was not dead when witness left.
Nicholas R.. Keogh, selector at Yulgilbar, Clarence River, eldest son of deceased has seen the body and recognised it as that of his father. Last saw his father alive at 4 p.m on
Saturday. He had just had his teeth extracted under chloroform. For three years his father had been in delicate health and was exceedingly weak. He was 51 years old, and a native of this State. He had 5 sons and one daughter living.
Deceased had recently applied for a conditional purchase lease at Yulgilbar, but this had not at the time of his death been confirmed to him. Deceased's life was insured in at least two offices. He had always been a man of temperate habits.
This concluded the evidence and the Coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death.
