    • Obituary: 28 Jan 1935, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; PIONEERING DAYS LATE MR. J. PEDERSEN'S LIFE (Contributed). PIALBA, January 25. By the death of Mr. Jens Pedersen this week, Nikenbah and the surrounding districts were robbed of one of their oldest and most popularly known citizens. Deceased, who had attained the advanced age of eighty seven years and 7 months, was the victim of a serious scalding accident two days prior to his death. Before this mishap he had enjoyed the best of health, and had attended to the many small duties associated with his farm. The late Mr. Pedersen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1848 and following his marriage in the old land decided to migrate to Australia. After the long tedious sea journey of that period, he arrived nearly 63 years ago at the White Cliffs near the mouth of the Mary River, where his only son, then an infant, died and was buried. A few Weeks later his first wife died while he was quartered at the old Immigration Depot in Maryborough. Deceased subsequently proceeded to Tiaro on the Mary River, where for a time he was engaged in farming. It was while he was at this place, he married Matilda Hansen who, strangely enough, was a native of the same tenement of buildings at the town of his birth. As a result of the nut grass menace on the Mary River he soon moved with his wife to the Nikenbah district, where on the place now occupied by Mr Lean, he made his home for many years. Later he purchased the place adjoining which he occupied up to the time of his death. Here he engaged first in general farming, and later in sugar growing. In the more recent years he associated dairying with sugar growing. In 1909 his wife died, after a long illness, and some years later he married Mrs. A Davis, of Maryborough. The latter lived only a few years, and for the third time he was left a widower. Some years following the death of his third wife he married Mrs. N. Mikkelsen, of Maryborough, who predeceased him in death by 4 and a half years. During his long association with the Nikenbah district the late Mr. Pedersen was noted for his probity and sincerity of purpose, and over the many disabilities and vicissitudes a long life he had maintained a swerving loyalty to his Christian principles and allegiance to his Christian duty. When the Nikenbah Dip Company was first formed he became its secretary, and for 29 years he occupied this position. On his retirement from this office a few years ago, the directors fittingly recognised his long and meritorious period of service to the company. He is survived by three daughters of his second marriage who comprise Mesdames J. Curtis, "Joy Farm", Pialba, J. W. Barbeier, Taabinga, Kingaroy and W. J. Taylor, Dundowran, Nikenbah. Nearly 40 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren also survive him. His remains were laid to rest in the Nikenbah Cemetery on Tuesday, when a concourse of the Brethren, preformed the burial service in the church and st the graveside.
