  1. 2.  James Fogg was born 1844, Sutton upon Trent, Nottinghamshire, England; was christened 28 Apr 1844, Sutton upon Trent, Nottingham, England (son of John Fogg and Mary Gilbert); died 13 Dec 1918, Dunellin Private Hospital, New Farm, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia; was buried 14 Dec 1918, Toowoong Cemetery, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

    Other Events:

    • Personal: 15 Feb 1873, Queenslander,Brisbane, Queensland; CONDAMINE. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) February 10. A few months ago in Dalby there were two or three cases of poisoning by stramonium, through children eating the flower or fruit of the thorn apple, with which persons embellish their gardens, thinking it, as no doubt it is, a pretty shrub, and on Friday a case occurred in this town of poison ing from the same cause, which at one time threatened to prove fatal to the subject of it, who was a little boy about two years old, the son of Mr. James Fogg. In the afternoon the little fellow showed symptoms of convulsion of the limbs, loss of power, and dilatation of the pupils of the eye, and those acquainted with the peculiar effects of the poisonous plant referred to, at oncs concluded that the boy had swallowed some portion of it, especially as it was found to be growing cose to his residence. Very strong emetics were almost immediately administered, but without the slightest effect, and I believe this is a peculiarity of narcotic poisons in general, and stramonium (the active principle of the thorn apple) in particular, that the action of the poison prevents the operation of emetics if any time has elapsed. Next, stimulants were freely administered, induding ammonia, strong coffee and brandy, and although some relief followed the administration of the remedies from time to time, yet the child continued to be partially convulsed from 4 o'clock in the afternoon until 3 o'clock next morning, whan there was a sudden change for the batter, and from that time ha continued to improve steadily, so that he was able to play about in the course of Saturday, although it was evident the spinal chord still remained slightly affected, as he had not the usual control of bis lower extremities. It is to be hoped that parents and guardians who cultivate gardens will see the advisability of exterminating this ornamental shrub without much loss of time if they value the safety of their little ones.
