Fowler, John Hay (??1911)
Another familiar figure in pastoral circles passed away on 28th February last at Narrandera, N.S.W. Mr. John Hay Fowler came of old Devonshire stock, his father, Captain Silas Fowler, of the P. and O. service, having been a native of Torrington, in Devonshire. His mother was Miss Ruth Simpson, sister of Mr. Morris Simpson, of Stonehenge, N.S.W. The late Mr. Fowler was born and educated in Sydney, and while at school showed a great talent for engineering. On the death of his parents, when he was twelve years old, the late Sir John Hay, President of the Legislative Council, adopted him. He first spent a few years in the Mercantile Bank, Sydney, but soon relinquished this, to him, uncongenial employment to go on to the land. In 1893, then, he went as overseer to Bringagee Station, Hay, and later on accepting the position of manager, held the post till just before the time of his death, which resulted from acute appendicitis. He was thus associated with the station for seventeen years, and took a keen interest in matters connected with his district during the later years of his managership, being a member of the Carrathool Shire and the Hay Pastures Protection Board. He was also a member of the Hay branch of the Pastoralists' Union, and was on the committee of the Border Leicester and Australian Longwool Sheepbreeders' Association.
