Notes |
- According to Alexander MORISON, author of "The Blackhalls of that Ilk...", his grandfather's brother John MORISON (1766-1837) was a Writer to the Signet in Edinburgh, like his father Andrew, and a well- known and prosperous lawyer. He purchased the estate of Hetland in Dumfriesshire, where he died on 15 May 1837. He married Jean FARQUHAR, daughter of Robert FARQUHAR of Newhall, Kincardineshire and grand-daughter of James MUIRISON or MORISON of Elsick and Disblair, Aberdeenshire. A footnote says James MUIRISON/MORISON is registered in the births of Aberdeen on 25 April 1708 as MUIRISON.
John and Jean had three daughters: Mary, who married the Rev. James BUCHANAN; Amelia Grant, wh didn't marry; and Agnes, who married her cousin Farquhar McCRAE. Farquhar was a son of Margaret MORISON and William Gordon McCRAE. Mary and the Rev. James BUCHANAN had a daughter, Jean Morison BUCHANAN, who married twice. I have no record of John marrying twice or of marrying anyone else other than Jean.
Information which you may or may not find useful - I find it fascinating: The author Alexander MORISON was apparently so enamoured with his connection to The Blackhalls of that Ilk that he officially altered his name to Alexander BLACKHALL-MORISON. There is a large collection of MORISON family documents in safe-keeping with the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh filed under "The Alexander Blackhall-Morison Collection". Furthermore, Andrew MURISON's family papers are with the National Archives of Scotland, RefNo: GD1/808/1-9. Both resources can be reached on the Internet.
All the best, Chris
