    Centenarian's Death

THE death occurred on October 18, at his property, Bell's Bridge, of Mr. Michael Purcell, at the great age of 101 years. The late Mr. Purcell was
born at Innes, County Clare, Ireland, and came to Australia in 1862. He arrived in Brisbane, which was then a small town, and was later employed on the construction of the railway line from Ipswich to Toowoomba. He joined in the gold rush to Gympie, and was actively engaged in mining for a number of years, but, following an accident in one of the mines, he gave up the work and took up land on Widgee Creek. From a comparatively small selection the late. Mr. Purcell gradually acquired surrounding properties, and at the time of his death he held over 6000 acres of fine grazing land. Dairying occupied his attention when he first took up land, but in later years he turned to the raising of beef cattle, especially Herefords. He is survived by his widow (formerly Miss Mary M'Cann, of Fassifern station) and five sons, Messrs. Francis Thomas, Patrick, and Paul Purcell, Acting Sergeant Andrew Purcell (Oakey), and Constable W. Purcell (South Brisbane), and five daughters, Mesdames G. Fowles (Gympie), A. Quinn (Mackay), Edwards (Chatsworth), and Misses Margaret and Violet Purcell (Bell's Bridge).
