    1852-3: Secretary to Vice Admiral James W.D. Dundas, C.B., onboard HMS BRITANNIA, 120, then operating as Flag Ship in the Mediterranean (it would appear he had done well within the Paymaster Branch - unless you had the right connections, or were very good at your job, few paymasters achieved this sort of position. Amongst the Admiral's retinue would have been his office staff, which would also have been David's responsibility.

    1854: HMS Britannia was in the Crimea and present at the 1st bombardment of Sebastopol.

    Paymaster David James Simpson was a paymaster of January, 1831, and a paymaster and purser of 1834. He was employed in the Leander, 50, on particular service from September, 1849, until the close of 1851. As secretary to Vice-Admiral Dundas in the Britannia, in the Black Sea fleet, from January, 1852, until 1855, and was appointed pay-master-in-chief, 25th July, 1856.
