- Pioneer Maleny Dairy Director
MR. W. H. APLIN PASSES
At Maroochydore, where he had been residing in retirement for a few months, the death occurred on Christmas Day of Mr. William Henry Aplin, one of the first Maleny Dairy Association's directors, at the age of 85 years.
The late Mr. Aplin was born at Bowen (Queensland). He had his primary schooling at Townsville, where his father was in business, and then attended a college in Hobart (Tasmania). After school days were spent on his father's cattle station, and he returned to Townsville. Deceased's father was a well know resident of Townsville, a Shorthorn beef breeder, and a member of the Legislative Council. He also went to Burke town, where he engaged in business. Arriving in the Maleny district in 1903. he selected land there, and which is now being farmed bv his only son. He became a director of the Maleny Dairy Associatioh in 1904. and was chairman of directors from 1909 to 1914. The finance scheme in which the present factory was built was really originated by the late Mr. Aplin. He was a very sound and fair critic at all meetings of shareholders of the Maleny Association, and was also an original shareholder of the Murarrie Co-operative Bacon Co. When he retired early in 1952 to reside at Maroochydore he rented his farm to his son. The late Mr. Aplin had recalled that when he first commenced dairying, farmers then received 3d. per lb. for their butter, and the produce was taken by packhorse to Landsborough. He was also interested in fruit growing, and more often than not, received an account for produce forwarded to Brisbane. Surviving him are his widow, three daughters, Mrs. I. L. Phillips (Port Moresby), Miss Doris Aplin (Maroochydore), Mrs. S. F. Hodgens (Brisbane), and a son. Mr. William Aplin (Maleny) ; also two sisters. Mrs. W. Mylton (Ayr) and Mrs. F. Wakeford (Townsville).

The Co-op was formed at a meeting at Joseph McCarthy's residence near Mountain View Road, on 3 May 1903. The first cans of cream were treated at the Maple Street Butter Factory on the 19 December 1904 and the first shareholder to deliver cream was Mr Alec Bryce of Reesville. The Co-op had three butter factories in all, the last one ceased processing butter in July 1981. The Co-op amalgamated with the Caboolture Co-op on 1 July 1978. Caboolture Co-op then amalgamated with other dairy co-ops in late 1989 forming Queensco.
