Farewell Evening For Mr. and Mrs. W. Hoffman
GOOTCHIE, February 3.-A farewell evening convened by the members of Q.C.W.A. Gootchie branch was held in Gundiah Hall on January 31, in honour of their fellow member and her husband, Mrs. and Mr. W. Hoffman, senr., who after 41 years' residence amongst us have decided to make their future home at Scarness.

The hall was filled to capacity by relatives and friends from all parts of the district. All assembled to show their esteem and to honour to this pioneer couple. Miss Barrett had charge of the music and with the help of Mrs. Hopper all had a most enjoyable time, dancing. Miss Pearl Neilsen (piano) and Mr. Neilsen (drums), assisted Miss Barrett.

    EUCHRE AND COMPETITIONS
Mr. Jim Keliher carried out the duties of M.C. and Mr. D. D. Sheehan was doorkeeper. Euchre was conducted by Mr. D. D. Sheehan and this was greatly enjoyed. The winners handed their gains to the presentation fund. The euchre prize money was donated by Mr. Jim Keliher. A children's Monte Carlo was held, the winners being Misses Stephanie Hoffman and Cullen. A competition was ably conducted by Mrs. Jarvis, the prize being a beautifully made and decorated cake, given by Miss C. Barrett. The winner was Mrs. A. Egan. The tea and coffee was prepared by Mr. John Whelan. jnr. Supper was prepared by C.W.A. members, and served by a band of willing workers.

    GOOD WISHES
After supper the guests of the evening with Mr. J. P. Keliher (chairman), Mr. F. Bolderrrow, Mr. Brookes, of Bauple, representing Q.D.O., and Mr. A. Shawbridge, a very old friend, were assembled on the stage. The chairman wished them success and good health in their new home and called on Mr. Brookes to address the gathering. Mr. Brookes spoke of the hard work it was in the old days to carry on and rear a family. He complimented the guests on having reared a family of seven children. four daughters and three sons, all of whom are married and mostly settled on the land. The youngest son joined the Navy during the recent war and is still serving his country in the Navy. Mr. Brookes also stressed that the family had been reared before endowment when no assistance whatever was able to be obtained and said that any couple who had reared a family of seven children in those times had performed a wonderful achievement. Mr. Strawbridge then spoke of the guests, saying how long he had known them, and speaking of the battle they had had to keep going, and said they were worthy of all respect.

    PRESENTATION
The chairman then called on Councillor F. Bolderrow to make the presentation. Cr. Bolderrow spoke of the good work done by ex-Councillor W. Hoffman, while he was a councillor in the Tiaro Shire, and of the sterling, good qualities and help given at all times by the guests. Then on behalf of all present he presented an envelope well filled with notes to Mr. Hoffman and asked him to accept it with the sincere good wishes of all present. On behalf of Mrs. Hoffman's fellow workers an envelope of notes was presented to Mrs. Hoffman. The chairman then thanked their speakers and all present for coming to the evening. Mr. Hoffman on behalf of his wife and himself thanked all present for being so kind and thoughtful to them. He gave a very interesting resume of his early days, and also of the first work done in the district, speaking of the early school days and the first teacher who was there at Munna Creek State School. This was received with sincere acclamation. Before the meeting closed the chairman introduced Mr. and Mrs. T. Cullen who have come to take up residence in the district on Mr. Hoffman's farm. They were heartily welcomed and Mr. Cullen suitably responded. All stood and sang "For They are Jolly Good Fellows," and three ringing cheers were given. An apology was received from Mr. W. Sauer. chairman of Tiaro Shire Council, who could not be present owing to health reasons. He sent his compliments and best wishes to the guests from his wife, and himself.
