    A CURIOUS CASE.
    THE DEATH OF JOHN HARTLEY.

An inquest was conducted before the Acting City Coroner, Mr. Stephen Murphy, yesterday afternoon concerning the death of John Hartley, 34, lately employed as a railway fuel man, who died on the 9th inst at Paddington.

Dr. Arthur Aubrey Palmer stated that he examined the body, and found a small bruise on the head above the right eye. The skull was fractured, and there was a laceration of the brain, which caused hemorrhage. In his opinion death was due to those injuries.

Ivy Jane Bridger deposed that she heard someone moaning in the yard of the Coachman's Arms Hotel. She looked over the fence, and saw deceased lying in the yard with his head resting on a garbage tin. Thorsen, the licensee of the hotel, came into the yard while deceased was there. Witness added that Mrs. Thorsen had asked her not to mention that her husband had gone into the yard at the time.

Arthur Edmund Thorsen, licensee of the Coachman's Arms Hotel, denied having seen any man in his yard on the date in question.

Catherine Thorsen denied having asked the witness Bridger not to mention her husband had been in the yard.

The verdict was to the effect that death was due to injuries received to the head, but by what means those injuries were received the evidence was not sufficient to enable the Acting City Coroner to say.
