    TIMBER IN THE MARY VALLEY.
    TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,-I crave space in your valuable paper to reply to what I consider an unjust attack on the millers and timbergetters of the Mary Valley, by Mr. W. Pagan, while on a visit of inspection to the Mary Valley line. As one of the timbergetters or "timber butchers," as Mr. Pagan wishes to term us, and also an old resident of the Mary Valley, I wish to point out to Mr.Pagan that the greatest destruction of timber has been caused by the Railway Department, and not the Lands Department. Thousands of feet of ironbark have been felled for railway purposes, and just because there was a small defect in them they have been left to rot or burn with the bush fires. This I can prove to Mr. Pagan when next he visits this district. With reference to the destruction of timber by ringbarking, I wish to also point out that very nearly all the ringbarked country traversed by the Mary Valley line is freehold property, and has been for many years, and that leasehold properties cannot be ringbarked without a permit from the Lands Department, and also have to be inspected by a Crown Ranger. Moreover, the majority of timbergetters in the Mary Valley are land owners or occupiers of land, and too well know the value of timber to wilfully destroy the marketable trees by ringbarking. Therefore, I cannot see how Mr. Pagan arrived at such an unjust opinion of the timber men of this district. Thanking you,
    I am, sir, & c
