Blampied, John Ernest, Waihi, miner

Waihi, is located at the Southern end of New Zealand's Coromandel Peninsula.
Our native bush, the breathtaking Karangahake Gorge and the nearby white-sand stretches of Waihi Beach are just a few of the natural resources that we enjoy. Numerous groups and organisations cater for sport, recreation and the arts. Our region boasts a diverse group of businesses involved in a wide range of ventures, from tourism to dairy and dry-stock farming.
As well as a thriving present day community, the town and surrounding region has a rich and fascinating history. Part of this history includes over 100 years of mining of gold and silver. Our present day mining operations (both open-cast and underground) exist alongside examples of the old methods of gold and silver extraction. Our pioneers weren't just involved in mining however. Last century saw Waihi in the forefront of work on radio and television development and manufacturing.

SIRES FOR THE SEASON.
Antonious, by Sir Foote (imp.) from Antonia, by Bengal, is advertised to stand this season at Mr. E. Blampied's farm, Murray River, near Rutherglen. Antonious was a high-class racehorse and won over £4000 in stakes, and would have held a champion's position as a stake winner had he not appeared in the turf arena in the same season as the brilliant Poseidon, further particulars may be obtained on application to Mr. E. Blampied, Rutherglen P.O., Vic.

The buyer at Lilliput states that J. Peirce of Springhurst who harvested an eight bag crop, delivered a very fine sample, his bags averaging just on 200lb. James Humphries had a 50 acre crop at Carlyle which averaged eight bags and E. Blampied of Carlyle obtained a return of eight and a half bags from a 60 acre paddock.

RUTHERGLEN CROPS.
Results of Competition.
In his report on the Rutherglen crop competition the manager of the State Experimental Farm, Rutherglen (Mr C P Goulding) states that the standard of the crops exhibited was high. The chief faults were the presence of saffron thistles and lack of trueness to type. Diseases were present in all crops to some extent, but it was thought that the yields would not be appreciably lowered. The most prevalent disease was loose smut. Unfortunately no adequate means of control of this disease is available to the farmer except obtaining seed from a source free from this disease. Flag smut, take-all, and rest were noticed in a few crops. Dry pickling is the general practice in the district, and ball smut is rarely seen. In nearly all cases the quanities of seed and manure used were approximately 70lb, an acre. These quantities are satisfactory for present price conditions.

MR. ERNEST BLAMPIED
Mr. Ernest Blampied, whose death was recorded in our last issue, was 73 years of age and was born at Blampied, near Daylesford, the settlement taking its name from the family. Fifty years ago he settled at Rutherglen, where he resided. On a visit to New Zealand, he married Miss Margaret Hallahan at Waiki, a native of Rutherglen, and the couple returned to the district where Mr. Blampied took on farming. He was a keen judge of Shorthorn cattle, and trained horses for district races. His wife predeceased here two years ago. He leaves one son, John, and one daughter, Nellie (Mrs. Peters, Footscray). After a service at St. Mary's Church, Rutherglen, conducted by Rev. Fr. Forster, the funeral took place at the Carlyle Cemetery.
