    Other Events:

    • Obituary: 2 Sep 1932, Nambucca and Bellinger News, NSW; MRS. HARRIETT LUMSDEN. One of the oldest pioneers of this district passed away, on Tuesday last, in the person of Mrs. Harriett Lumsden, relect of the late Richard Lumsden, who died three years ago. After a comparatively healthy life time of 73 years, she took ill about six months ago and entered Macksville Hospital a fortnight ago. On Wednesday the body was taken to the Macksville Anglican Church, where a short service was held. In the course of his funeral address, after expressing sincere sympathy with the bereaved, the Rector (Rev. G. S. Watts) said that the band of pioneers-men and women of heroic spirit-was becoming smaller with the passage of the years. They were the people who had made Australia great; they had laid, worthily and well, the foundation of a new nation. On this foundation of moral integrity and religious faith the childen and heirs of the old pioneers must build, with proud and happy memories of the great examples set by those into whose heritage they had entered. The pioneers, with unfailing courage, faced incredible difficulty, hardship and danger; they laughed at impossibilities, and cried, "It shall be done!". That afternoon they honored and mourned one of that noble company who toiled on and struggled on "through the long gorge to the far light," and who now in the solemn adventure of death had found that "the toppling crags of Duty scaled, Are close upon those shining tablelands, To which our God Himself is moon and sun." It would be difficult, the Rector continued, for him to express the regard and affection which he had entertained for the late Mrs. Lumsden, suffice it is to say that the highest qualities of the pioneer were manifest in herself and in her husband who had predeceased her. He had known them in his childhood, and had learned to revere them for their uprightness of character and wonderful neighborliness. Their forefathers stood by each other to lend a helping hand; a lesson which succeeding generations needed to remember. In conclusion, he reminded his hearers of the Christian doctrine of Immortalitv: there was another life beyond the present one, and for this future life the most solemn and careful preparation was needed. If they desired reunion in the Life of the World to Come with dear ones who had "fallen asleep in Jesus" they must attend to their duty of public and private worship, and to the carrying, out of the Law of God in daily life. Into the hands of an Almighty and All-loving Creator they commended the souls of the faithful ' departed : "Father, in Thy gracious keeping, leave me now Thy servant sleeping." At the close of the service the Dead March was played by Mrs. W. McGee. The funeral then proceeded to the Anglican portion of the Macksville cemetery, where the remainder of the funeral service was conducted by Rev. G. S. Watts in the presence of a large number of relatives and sympathisers. The late Mrs. Lumsden was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Feld (Clarence River). When 12 months old she went to the Macleay, where she resided for 12 years, coming to Lower Nambucca 63 years ago, residing on the farm there till her death. At the time of her coming here Macksville was unknown, except by the presence of two or three shacks or humpies. On the further end of the property now occupied by Mr. E. Mcllwain, between the Butter Factory and Newee Creek bridge, stands a specimen of date tree which it is understood does not bear fruit until sixty years old. The tree was planted by the late Mrs. Lumsden, and she lived to see it bear fruit, some of which was exhibited at this year's Macksville Show. Deceased's children in clude, Mrs. Tess. Sutton (Waverley), Mrs. Ed. Smith (Beralla, near Sydney), Miss Isabel Lumsden (Kempsey , Misses Lilian May and Annie Mary Lumsden (at home), Henry Willliam (at home), Richard James (Sydney), Fred. R. B. (at home), Clarence Gordon (Bowraville), Selwyn Clarence (at home). Sisters: Mrs. H. Louis and, T. Cooling (Sydney). Nambucca and Bellinger News, NSW., Friday, 2 September 1932
