    • Obituary: 2010, Find A Grave Memorial; Barbara Lee Johnson Hoover Died Nov. 6, 2010 after losing her battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Born on September 29, 1924 in Almira, Washington to Walter C. Johnson and Alice Beulah Horton, she spent her youth there along with her younger brother Kerry Harlan Johnson. She studied violin especially enjoying classical music and helped her mother in a family grocery store. When she was seventeen, she moved to Coulee Dam where she held a job at the local movie theater. A year later, she married James Olsen and had four children; Jim, Patty, John, and Carol. A divorce from James brought her to Spokane where she made a home in Spokane Valley, went to work for Dr. Edward Saxon as a receptionist, and invited her brother, just out of the service, to live with her. Shortly after he married Iris Simonsen in 1958, Barbara married Harvey C. Hoover, a widower with six children. Barbara found employment in the insurance area, and she and Harvey built a home in Millwood. They spent time at their lake place at Priest, skied all of the area slopes from Mt. Hood to Red Mountain, and both became members of Millwood Presbyterian Church. After Barbara retired, she and Iris, her sister-in-law, traveled to Italy, France, Germany, and Denmark where they visited Iris' family. When they returned, Barbara decided to take a more active role in Harvey's business and spent the next ten years learning all about office supplies. Upon his death, Barbara moved to Kennewick to be with her son, Jim and his wife; later moved to Electric City; and finally, in September of 2009, moved to Spokane to live with her daughter, Patty Harrison. In December of that same year, her doctor diagnosed her with pancreatic cancer. She lived in the house she shared with Patty until the cancer claimed her life. Preceding her in death were her parents, her brother and his wife, and her son, Jim. She is survived by her children: Patty Moffat Harrison (Tom and Julie), Carol Gates (Jennifer and Jason), John Olsen, Jim's children (Andy and Kristin) and Harvey Hoover's children: Ronald (Scott, Kim and Jolene), Rodney (Kiendra and Koy), Victor, Merle, Marilyn (Jamie and Jeff), Kent (Neil and Ross), and her two nieces, Anne Marie Elmquist and Barbara Ellen Johnson. Barbara will always be remembered for her generous, caring nature and her loving heart. (Find A Grave Memotial)

Schleswig-Holstein, located on the southern part of the Jutland peninsula in Denmark have at different times during history belonged to either Denmark or Germany. In the wake of the Napoleonic wars, a strong Germanic national awakening arose in Holstein and the southern parts of Schleswig whilst northern Schleswig experienced an equally strong Danish national sentiment.

The disastrous war between Denmark and Prussia in 1864 was a decisive defeat for Denmark. The duchies which had been under Danish rule (and so most of the population considered themselves Danish rather than German), now came under Prussian administration. Some 200,000 Danes found themselves living under German rule, governed by pro-German policies and compulsory enlisting in the German military. As a result, a large number of people emigrated to far away destinations such as America and Australia. It is estimated that 250,000 people emigrated out of Schleswig-Holstein between 1830 and 1930.
