      DEATH OF MRS G. R. E. WRIGHT

With very deep regret we report the death at her home, "Midlothian",
Scotland Place, on Monday afternoon of Mrs Gladys Ruby Ellen Wright, wife of
      Mr Gave Wright.
Mrs Wright took a prominent part in the town's business and professional
life. For many years she was secretary of the Stawell District Hospital and
her association with local cultural organisations was a practical example
and marked encouragement to members. Heartfelt sympathy is offered to her
husband, son and daughter in their loss.
Her competence and cheerful efficiency were appreciated by everyone who had
business dealings with her in the multitude of duties she undertook, and she
had a rare gift for friendship. Perhaps her keenly trained business mind
enabled her to remember little personal details better than many others, but
she never failed to do those little things that matter so much in times of
trouble or anxiety, that endeared her always to those with whom she came in
contact. As registrar of birth and deaths, Mrs. Wright discharged her
responsible office with a depth of tact and understanding that was always a
comfort. In a long residence in Stawell she made a host of friends. Gifted
with an infallible memory, her personal association with Stawell's
development sand history was frequently the source of valued information and
her readiness to assist is affectionately recalled by many who had the
      privilege of her co-operation.
A notable characteristic was her zest for living. The variety of her
interests was amazing. Whatever organisation had the benefit of her
membership knew her generous assistance and unfailing enthusiasm. Cultural
bodies in Stawell have lost a gracious patron, one who was always ready with
encouragement and practical support and who administrative ability was
freely available, regardless of personal inconvenience.
The daughter of prominent citizens of Stawell, Mrs Wright inherited her
father's business ability and her mother's cultural talent. Her father, for
many years secretary of the Stawell Athletic Club and of many other local
organisations, passed on to her a flair for thoroughness and integrity which
were fully appreciated in the town and district, and she took over many of
he offices he had filled so splendidly.
Her appointment as secretary of the Stawell District hospital was followed
by a long period of faithful service, distinguished by the intensely
personal interest she took in the institution and its patients and her
unflagging zeal to promote their welfare. Her retirement through ill-health
was matter for genuine regret by all, and her proud records of service
marked the most successful area of the Hospital's history. She always
retained a special interest in the hospital an its progress, and up to the
time of her death was treasurer of the Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, in which
office her wise direction and expert management were of great value.
Mrs Wright was local Mining Registrar as well as registrar of Births and
Deaths, and her profound statistical knowledge was invaluable. She occupied
the position of secretary of the Stawell Cemetery Trust, and in years gone
by was secretary of the Stawell Traders' Association. Her love of music and
theatre were shown by her work for the Stawell Cultural Society in its Music
and Drama Groups, and her loyal attendance at concerts was appreciated. She
was a devout member of St Matthew's Presbyterian Church, and failing health
seldom interrupted her regular attendance at services. Her home was open
house to her friends and during her indifferent health lately, many of the
organisations in which she was so keenly interested, held meetings there so
      that she could attend.
Born at Horsham, she was a daughter of the late Hastings and Mary Jane Bell.
She was twice married, at Stawell to Colin Coleman Green, and at Melbourne
to Gaviat Wright to whom and to her son and daughter, Colin Coleman Green of
Hampton and Enid (Mrs. J. Gunn, of Bolwayn [sic]) sincere sympathy is
      offered.
The funeral is appointed to leave St Matthew's Presbyterian Church this
afternoon at 2.30 p.m. for the Stawell Cemetery. Messrs. Fred Crouch and
Son have charge of the arrangements.

      Music Group's Christmas Programme

Massed arrangements of stately Christmas lilies, scarlet roses and holly
foliage made an effective decoration in the sitting room at the home of Mr
and Mrs W Fleetwood-Smith, Scallan Street, on Tuesday night, when the
Stawell Music Group held its final meeting for the year with a Christmas
      programme.
More than 20 members attended and they were welcomed by the president, Mrs
      R. J. McClure, who made feeling reference to the loss sustained by the Group
in the death of Mrs G R E Wright. The reverent observance of a tribute to
her wholehearted membership of the Group. "Mrs Wright was one of our finest
members and even when ill-health could have excused indifference, the
practical enthusiasm by which she made herself interested in the Group and
its affairs set an example to all of us which we will long remember", Mrs
McClure said. "The advice she gave us was always sound; her knowledge and
experience meant much in the Group's success and we mourn the passing of a
      very dear friend."

Concluding remark at end of article: "This is one of the best nights the
Group has had in the four years it has been functioning".
