      OLD PIONEERS
      PASSING OF EX-CR JAMES HOLDEN
      WELL KNOWN GRAZIER

The many Stawell friends of Ex-Cr James Holden, of "Overdale", will learn
with feelings of deep regret that he passed to his last long rest at the
residence of his daughter (Mrs. J. Dick, "Yaamba", Kooyong road, Malvern) on
      Saturday night.
The late Mr. Holden was one of the oldest colonists, and was a man of
probity and of great business ability, as was evidenced by his municipal
career and generally useful life. He was not a man of many words, but he
had a great grasp of public affairs, and when he spoke on any subject at the
council table his remarks were listened to with great interest and at all
      times carried conviction.
He was 91 years of age, and was born near Parramatta, 40 miles from Sydney,
in 1832, his father being a dairy farmer. In 1849 the family removed to
Melbourne (then Port Phillip) and the voyage was made in the sailing vessel
Christina, with Captain Saunders in command, and it took three weeks to
accomplish the trip. They were not long in leaving Port Phillip, and went
to Geelong, where for five years he was apprenticed to a saddler. However,
some time later, at the age of 23, having a fancy for country life, he
selected land at Sutherland Creek, 10 miles from Geelong, and the late Mr.
      J. B. Hall (late of Watta Wella) was a close friend and neighbor. He
remained there for ten years, and in 1866 came to Stawell and selected land
at Watta Wella, where the "Overdale" homestead is now situated. With the
late Mr. J. B. Hall, he made several unsuccessful efforts to select land in
the Warrnambool district, but, as he often said, the influence of the
squatters was too strong to allow them to succeed.
In 1912 he gave over "Overdale" Estate to his sons, but continued to reside
there until about 12 months ago, when he went to Malvern to reside with his
daughter. He was possessed of a wonderful constitution, and only recently
underwent a serious operation on his eyes, which proved successful, and
enabled him to read right up to the time of his demise. He retained all his
faculties right to the last, and took a lively interest in municipal,
      political and general matters.
The late Mr. Holden had extensive grazing interests at Watta Wella during
his long residence there, and he built up a good flock, which won golden
opinions throughout the district. The quality of the flock was reflected in
the high prices always obtained on the Melbourne and Geelong markets. He
enjoyed a great amount of popularity throughout Stawell and district, and
his pioneering work was much appreciated.
For 39 years he occupied a seat at the Stawell Shire Council table, and
always had the confidence of ratepayers. On three occasions he occupied the
presidential chair. In 1913 when he retired from the council his place was
taken by his son (Cr. G. T. Holden) so that the Holden family have served
the ratepayers worthily for practically half a century.
The deepest sympathy is extended to the family of the deceased gentleman,
whose wife predeceased him by 11 years. The members of the family are Mrs.
      W. H. Bell (Stawell), Mrs. J. Dick (Malvern), Mr. J. H. Holden (Traralgon
South), and Mr. G. T. Holden (Stawell). In addition to four children
deceased is survived by 7 grand children and seven great grandchildren.
The mortal remains of deceased were brought to Stawell yesterday afternoon
and laid to rest in the Stawell Cemetery. A large number of representative
citizens attended to pay their last tributes of respect to one who had
played an important part in the pioneering work of the district, and who,
together with his family, had always been held in the highest respect for
his straightforwardness and business accumen [sic].
The hearse was preceded by members of the Masonic fraternity, and deceased
was accorded a Masonic funeral. Some 20 or 30 motor cars followed behind
the mourning coaches, some of which travelled long distances from country
centres. The Rev. G. S. Lloyd (Methodist) read the burial service. The
shire councillors and engineer all attended out of respect for an old
colleague and his councillor son, both of whom had had long association at
      the council table.
The Rev. P. H. Widmer conducted the Masonic service. The coffin bearers
were members of the Shire Council and the pall bearers members of the
Masonic Lodge. Mr. F. Crouch conducted the funeral arrangements.
