    CROCODILES IN MARY RIVER
    Correspondent's Experiences
    S. C. Thomsen. "Travellers' Rest.", Brooweena, writes: Having read in the "Chronicle" the report of a crocodile being at Tiaro recently. I thought it might interest readers if I gave my experiences. About the year 1881, I, in company with my brother, was on the river bank about half a mile above where Gootchie Creek joins the Mary. There was a big deep stretch of water there, which in later years was called "between Mr. Johnston's and Mr. Easey's crossings." Whilst standing there I saw a crocodile or an alligator-I don't know which-rise to the top of the water and swim a little way, and then dive again. As far as I can remember, it was about 12 feet long. There is no mistake, the animal was there. I am positive. I left that part shortly after and returned to live there about the year 1893. I was very fond of line fishing and I used to go out in a boat at night to my favourite places. One place I liked very much. It was a steep bank into the river, with overhanging trees close to the water. I favoured that spot because I could tie up both ends of the boat to keep it from drifting out. It was my practice to fish with my line straight down. The depth was about 24 feet. On one particular night I was fishing there. It was very dark and I heard things round the boat that I could not understand, and once I distinctly heard scraping on the boat, which I thought was a turtle. Later I became aware that the boat was leaning over and I could not account for it. But while I was thinking about it the boat suddenly righted itself and I must admit that I had what they call the "wind up." I sat a little longer till between me and the bank I heard a sound like a horse blowing his nose loudly. I could stand no more, so 1 jumped up, undid the boat and with as much noise as possible, rowed away.
I went down next day to investigate and I found plain tracks on the mud bank of an alligator or crocodile. It was not much use talking about it in those days, for people wouldn't believe you. It was the same with the sharks at that time until my brother and I found one dead at Easey's crossing. Our boat was nine feet long and the shark was about 18 inches longer than the boat. That convinced them about the sharks. It is my opinion, crocodiles have been there for years and I believe that there are a good few of them about."

      DEATH OF DISTRICT PIONEER
the late Mr. Thomsen assisted his brother Andrew

Obituary 29 Jun 1943  Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland Find all individuals with events at this location
    DEATH OF DISTRICT PIONEER
    BROOWEENA, June 26
The death of Mr. Sophus Christian Thomsen, of Traveller's Rest, Brooweena, which occurred in the Biggenden Hospital, has removed one of the oldest and most highly respected residents of the district.

Born at Sonderburg, Denmark, on May 29, 1865, the late Mr Thomsen emigrated to Australia with his parents in 1874, in the ship Hershel, landing in Maryborough when that city was only a small town. His father obtained employment with Mr. B. Martins, of Scrub Hill, Pialba, but after a short time decided to select land of his own, and secured property at Deborah, on the Mary River, where he resided for many years.

    RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION
When a lad in his early teens, the late Mr. Thomsen assisted his brother Andrew as offsider driving a horse team and after a while secured a team of his own. He hauled railway material on the construction of the Maryborough-Gympie line, and also on the Kilkivan line construction, working through the construction of the Dickabram bridge over the Mary River at Miva. Incidentally it may be mentioned that it was while working on the construction of the Dickabram bridge, the late Mr. Charles Hendricksen- popularly known as "Lame Charie," was seriouslv injured through falling from the scaffolding. Mr. Hendricksen kept a fruit stall in Adelaide-street, Maryborough, when he recovered from this accident, and got about in a specially constructed bicycle which he "pedalled" by hand. The two men were great friends.

    THE LAND
In 1884 the late Mr. Thomsen married Miss Alice Hutchinson, daughter of Mr. Hugh Hutchinson of Tiaro. He then worked at casual labour in different parts of the district, and for some years was employed by the Tiaro Shire Council. When the first section Of the Gayndah line-Mungar to Brooweena, was being built he was farming at Pine Huts, Aramara and supplied the construction workers with vegetables. In 1903 he brought his wife and young family from Tiaro to "Flaunden," Boompa, the property of the late Mr. Thomas Yerby where he dairied for a time and later share-dairied with the late Mr. J. J. Hay at "Haysmere," Brooweena. Nearly forty years ago he selected land on Teebar Creek, naming his property "Traveller's Rest," where he resided to the end.

    SERVICE AS COUNCILLOR
Mr. Thomsen served the ratepayers as a councillor of the Woocoo Shire for a period of six years, and his practical knowledge of road work made him a valuable member.

Always a keen member of church work, his home was open at all times to preachers of the gospel, irrespective of creed. In later years he was an ardent worker for the Methodist Church, and was instrumental in forming the Brooweena Christian Endeavour Society. He acted as delegate of this society at conferences and conventions in various centres.

His remains were interred in St. Mary's Cemetery, Brooweena, after a service in the Methodist Church, Biggenden, conducted by Mr. Jones, an old friend of the deceased, and a service in the Methodist Church, Brooweena, conducted the Rev. B. Seymour, who also officiated at the graveside. A very large gathering of relatives and friends attended these services.

His wife predeceased him by eleven years, as did also his brother Andrew, and two sisters, Mrs. Pedersen (Nikenbah) and Mrs. Hoffman (Tiaro). Ono brother, Peter, aged 81, resides in North Queensland.

He is survived by five sons and six daughters, viz.. Albert, (Australian Garrison Forces, N.Q.), Peter, (A.I.F., New Guinea), Messrs Sophus and Edward (Brooweena), Mesdames J. J. Bargenquust (Boompa), S. Sorenson (Brisbane), E. Vanderwolf (Nikenbah), W. Douglas (Yerra), A. Wilson (Wynum), and A. Russell, Toowoomba). One daughter. Ruby, died in infancy. There are 42 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. One grand-daughter. Miss Myrtle Sorrensen, aged 19, was accidentally killed from a bolting horse at Dobbin, in 1932 and was buried at Cloncurry.

Besides his two sons, Albert and Peter, seven grandsons are serving in the Army. One in the R.A.A.F., served through the Middle East. One in the A.l.F. served in the Middle East and Greece. One in the A.l.F. was severely wounded in New Guinea, and was invalided home, but is now on duty. One in the Navy, and three at various battle stations in Australia.
