    Charge of Obscene Language
On Saturday, at the Dalby Police
    Court, before Mr Johnstone Smith,
J.P., Louis Hold was charged with using obscene language in George street,
Jandowae, on December 16th, to Constable Zahn.
Sergeant W. Nolan prosecuted and Mr W. J. Vowles appeared for defendant.
Henry W. G. Zahn, police constable,
    stationed and in charge of Jandowae;
said that on Wednesday last he saw
    defendant in George street, Jandowae,
about 12.45 p.m. Defendant called out
from behind witness "Mr Zahn, come
and have a drink!" He called twice.
Witness was then 10 or 12 yards away.
Witnesd went back and asked defendant what he meant? He then made use of the language complained of ("You, you won't have a-drink with me"). Witness then arrested him.
Quite a number of people were handy
on the street within hearing when he
    made use of the language.
To Mr Vowles: Witness did not
make use of a suggestion that defendant had a down on witness. Nothing was said about a threat to punch him (witness) on the nose. Witness did not strike defendant. The injury now showing on defendant''s face was caused by his falling in the street. When he subsequently released defendant, witness made no reference to the
    threat to punch.
To the Bench: Defendant was under
the influence of drink, but was capable of walking about the street.
Louis Hold, a bush worker, defendant in the case, said he had known Constable Zahn for six years. He came into Jandowae about noon on Wednesday to catch the train. He asked Constable Zahn to have a drink. He was "sober as a judge" at the time. Defendant's idea in asking him to have a drink was that he had been told that someone had said he was going to strike the constable on the nose. The constable came right at him and said "You have got a down on me." In the cells he afterwards kicked defendant.
Defendant was released on bail, and after that defendant had a conversation with the constable who told him he had heard someone say that defendant would hit him. Defendant left very good friends with the constable. He didn't know what he was charged with.
To Sergeant Nolan: Two months ago he heard the story about the constable. Two days ago he called at the Dalby Police Station and told the sergeant he had been charged with drunkenness, but he did not complainto him about ill-treatment in the cells.
The Bench said that Constable Zahn
was regarded as a conscientious officer, and his evidence must be considered. Defendant would be fined £1.
The fine was paid. The Dalby Herald, Tuesday, 22 December 1925
