NOTED ROWER & BOAT-BUILDER-Late Jas. McWatters
The late Mr. James McWatters, who passed away on May 10, at the mature age of 82 years and nine months, was the elder son of the late Hugh and Jane McWatters.
Born at Belfast in the year 1861, he came out to Queensland in the sailing ship Montmorency with his parents, over 80 years ago. The Montmorency migrants were transferred to the coastal steamer Queensland in Moreton Bay and landed on July 22, 1863, in Maryborough where the deceased and his parents spent the rest of their life.
His early years were lived at Dundathu where he acquired a sound knowledge of carpentry and boat-building. He specialised in improving flat bottom racing outriggers to round ones, and built several wager boats, the first to be built in the State.
The late Mr. McWatters was an ardent sculler and rower in his young days and a valued member of the Sims' Dundathu four-oared crew. Also in his younger days he was greatly interested in sailing, and was made a life member of the Maryborough Sailing Club soon after it started in 1829. He was fond of cruising in our fine bay waters.
He was a model waterman who loved the ships and steamers of the past and knew their captains and crews. He had artistic tendencies and could paint a ship, steamer and scenery in perfect form. He helped in the construction of the dredge Maryborough of Walkers. He was a M.U. Odd-fellow for 64 years.
The deceased possessed a fund of information in regard to old Maryborough with its stretch of tea-tree scrub in the north and its long stretch of tangled lantana in the south and west. In its roughly formed streets many of the tree stumps still remained in the days when kerosene and matches provided the street lights.
After serving the Maryborough Rowing Club for a number of years as caretaker, boatbuilder and repairer, the late Mr. McWatters joined the Harbour and Rivers Department as ship carpenter in connection with the local pilot service, later to gain a competency certificate to enable him to take charge of the pilot steamer when necessary. He retired on reaching the age limit. He contributed to the columns of the Chronicle a few years ago, many interesting reminiscences of his early days.
Mr. McWatters wife predeceased him only two months ago. He is survived by a family of five sons and four daughters, Messrs Hugh, Walter, James (Bundaberg), Lynton and Eric, Mesdames N. Bell (Bundaberg), J. Wilson, T. Brasch (Babinda), J. Christensen; also 16 grandchildren; a brother, Mr. W. A. McWatters and two sisters, Mrs. J. Higgins (East Brisbane) and Miss M. F. McWatters.
