HOW THE MONEY GOES.
The fish trade in Wellington is about to receive an impetus by the establishment of a new fishing company, which will have a wholesale, retail, and curing depot in the city, and will obtain its supplies from the French Pass, where it will have a fishing station. The project has been launched by Mr. J. Gidall, well known for several years as mate of the Government steamer Stella. With him are conjoined four practical men named J. Anderson, B. Nelson, Jno. Murray, and B. Thompson, two of whom will leave for the French Pass tonight to start active operations. The company have obtained for present purposes a shop in Upper Willis-street close to tho Working Men's Club, but they purpose, as soon as possible, acquiring premises nearer the wharf. The shop will be opened on Monday or Tuesday next. When the buisness is thoroughly established it is expected that a large trade will be done by means of carts, which will take fish all round the city. In connection with the fish-catching depot in the Sounds, it is intended to construct artificial dams or ponds, in which the fish will be kept alive until the arrival of the steamer which is to convey them to market. By this means the fish will always arrive perfectly fresh. The idea seems a, very practical one, and should, if carried out perseveringly, be calculated to create trade by fostering the demand for this wholesome food. Mr. Gidall and his friends in the venture have our best wishes for their success.

'The name of Mr. John Flynn was mentioned as at the gathering of New Zealand war veterans lalely at Hawera. He was wounded at Te Ngutu-o-te- Mauti and his rear-rank man, "Jacob" Gidall, grazed. It will be regretted by all the old hands to learn that " Jacob," mate of the Luna, Hineinoa, and other Government steamers, is now practically blind, residing with his son-in-law, Mr. Pickering, at Shakespeare-road. Napier. Jacob and I underwent, on the same day, operations on the eye, he being, unfortunately, unsuccessful, whilst I came out with the residue of one eye. ? 1 am, etc. J. T. MARSHALL.
