Note for the PORT of BREMERHAVEN
BREMERHAVEN is a Seaport town of Germany in the Free State of Breman, on the right Bank and Estuary of the Weser.
The Maryborough Chronicle of the 6th instant reports that the German immigrant ship Humboldt left Hamburg on the 3rd of July, 1873, carrying 379 passengers including 118 children under 12 years of age of whom 18 were infants under 1 year. Soon after sailing, scarlantina appeared on board, but in consequence of the perfect isoation isolation of thoso affwsted, the desease was confined to a comparitavely small portion of the children. 18 of whom were affected -the last on the 4th of October.Three adults were also attacked. Among the numerous children whooping cough also broke out, about 30 of them were affected. Afterwards under the influence of cold weather in the southern latitudes, broncitis arose and carried off some of them. Near the conclusion of the voyage, survey appeared among the adults. this was the natural consequence of neglect of sufficient exercise, to which the women with large familiesare particularilr prone. Water and provisions were of the best quality. A condenser was on board the ship. the deaths on board included one adult female, after confinement: 7 infants under1 year: 9 children under 2 years, mostly of bronchitis: 6 children under 6 years.
Apart from the few cases of scurvy already mentioned, the health of the adults was most excellent, no serious desease having occured among them. Eight children were born on board the ship, three of them during her anchorage at White Cliffs, Hervey's Bay, the health officer ordered her to undergo six days quarantine, there having been contagious desease on board. This time was spent in cleaning and boiling everything used by the passengers during the voyage, a practice which is to be commended for all immigrant ships, in order that every possibility of the germs of contagion or of infection being afterwards on land in clothes or bedding may be precluded.

Kruså-Holdbi Kro
In the middle of the beautiful scenery in the southern part of Jutland ? only three kilometers from the German border ? you will find a traditional Danish inn. It is the ?Holdbi Kro? near Kruså. Entering the premises, you instantly get the sensation that something special is awaiting you. In the early days, the building was commonly referred to as the Royal Privileged Holdbi Inn but, in 1981, the old buildings were taken over and renovated by A Hereford Beefstouw. The eldest son of the Damgaard family, architect Søren Damgaard, was in charge of the restoration.
The cozy thatched house dates back to 1847 and the inn is rich with stories of its history. According to the A Hereford Beefstouw tradition, the restaurant houses several pieces of art. The walls are decorated with paintings by Henry Heerup, amongst others. A decanting machine holds a prominent position in the middle of the room and has become a natural part of the interior ? just like the classic grill, the salad bar and the solid wooden tables.
The restaurant in Kruså has room for 56 dining guests and it is possible to arrange for larger parties in separate rooms connected to the restaurant.

TIARO
(From our own Correspondent)
March 1
Since Saturday morning the water has been gradually disappearing from the fertile banks of the river under cultivation, and the crops to a great extent are seen to be levelled and where the corn is left standing it is found to be quite spoilt, as in less than 24 hours the grains crack and commence growing. The houses that were submerged are in a most deplorable state, being covered with mud, and it is impossible at present to calculate the loss sustained by the farmers. A farmer at Gundiah, in describing his loss by the flood, states that not only was the corn ready to pick carried away by the waters and the winter crop completely spoiled, but the surface of the land, ploughed deep, was completely washed away, ruining the farm, and this is by no means an individual case. Considerable damage has been done to fencing, culverts and roads throughout the Tiaro Division; at Teebar and Clifton the damage to fences was great and the loss of stock not yet known, but several carcases of drowned horses have been found.
The water in Teebar Creek was 6 feet higher than in the '75 flood, but happily only one life has been lost-namely, Anton Emill Anderson, nephew of the man Joaaeson who was drowned at Miva crossing about a month ago. Deceased was employed at Mr. Bundersen's farm as a labourer, and Mr. Bundersen, seeing a lot of cockatoos on a patch of corn left, high and dry by the flood, caught a horse with the intention of swimming a creek that intervened, in order to drive the cockatoos away. Anderson asked where he was going, and being told, said you are an old man, let me go, I am younger than you. After some persuasion, Buudersen consented, and Anderson rode into the creek, which was backed up by the flood waters; there was no current. After getting in a little way, both horse and man went under. The carcass of the horse was got about an hour after, but up to the present the body of the man is not recovered. The friends of the deceased and the police are making every effort to recover the body.

Notes:
FLOOD NEWS.
TIARO TO GOOTHIE.
[FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRBSPONDENT.]
Tiaro, February 16.
First it should be recorded that the three dairies have suspended operations owing to the impassable state of the road. A brisk demand for cheese has sprung up and is likely to continue for some time, which would enable the dairies here to extend operations, if only the weather changed. Most of the dairymen have had to turn their cows out, a serious lose to them when the cows shall again be needed.
Starting from the Tiaro Bridge on the eastern bank of the river the next farm claiming notice is Mr. Neilaman?s. His house is situated above flood mark, but like many others he was not so careful respecting his barn, but that was only 18 inches under water and his corn was placed up aloft. He, however, lost about 12 acres of growing maize.
The adjoining farm is owned and worked by Mr. Boi Jaoobsen, whose house was three feet under water, and his barn completely submerged, causing the destruction of 15 bags of maize, two bags of seed wheat, and one ton of potatoes. He also lost 15 acres of maize in the field and one acre of lucerne. Mr. Jacobean fortunately got his furniture safely carted into the town, where he and his family have sincs resided.
The lofty railway bridge crossing what is here known as Nash?s gully was fully two feet under water, a fact hard to realize when standing on Mr. Jacobsen?s land.
The farms of Messrs. Lawrence, Stevens and Barriskil, I shall report upon in my next, when taking the opposite bank, from which a fair view can only be obtained of the immense land slips which have occurred hereabouts and which are daily increasing.
The next farm has recently been leased to Mr. J. Cook, who has erected a substantial house upon it, which was just above flood level, but the family cleared to Tiaro for safety. He lost 60 acres of maize.
His neighbour, Mr. Cornwell, has his house and outbuildings erected on very high ground, but the waters came so near that Mr. Cornwell and his family cleared to a small dairy recently erected by him on a high and dry ridge on the road to Tiaro. No crops were lost here.
Mrs. Gilchrist, lost about 5 acres of maize, and like her next neighbour, Mrs. Gordon, had to turn out her dairy herd.
Mr. Gilchrist, jun., has lost about 5 acres of ripe maize and 4 acres of lucerne. His barn was flooded, destroying about 200 bushels of maize, but his hay in shed was above flood level. Fully 16 acres of low lying land has from one to two feet of sand washed on to it.
Adjoining this property is the tobacco farm occupied by Austin and Gilchrist, who have lost 31 acres of growing tobacco, which promised to give a heavy yield- a discouraging beginning for them.
Passing the uncultivated property known as Home Park, we come to a very low-lyiug farm occupied by Mr. W. Young, who bas necessarily suffered severely. The land is exceedingly rich, which may be accepted as an excuse for tbe great risk of working such low-lying land. Mr. Young's house was situated on high land away back in the forest, but his barn was 7 feet under water, causing the destruction of 70 bags of maize and all his harness. He also lost 9 acres of growing maize, 1 acre of lucerne, 10 pigs, over 100 fowls, 10 tons of hay in stack, and one tank.
Mr. George Jensen owns the next farm, and had his house slightly submerged, but his neighbour, Mr. Thompson, kindly came to the rescue with his dray and horses and took his goods to a place of safety. The barn was high and dry, enabling Jensen to save his dry corn and hay, but he lost 6 acres of growing maize, 2 acres of lucerne, and half an acre of tobacco.
Mr. Rasmussen?s house and barn are wisely built above even this flood level, and he was able to harbour his neighbour, Jensen and family, for three days. Mr. Rasmussen, however, lost 15 acres of maize and an acre of lucerne.
His neighbour, Mr. S. Thompson, had 2 feet of water in his house, but his barn was above flood mark. He lost 3 acres of green maize, and the fearful current hereabouts washed the soil off 6 acres of his land and left a deposit of 2 feet of sand on other 3 acres.
His brother, Mr. A. Thompson, had both his bouse and barn under water, but he cleared by boat on Friday night to Mr. Casey?s. He lost 600 bushels of maize and a ton of potatoes in his barn, and 11 acres of green corn.
Mr. Casey?s house and barn were high and dry, but he lost 3 acres of young maize.
Mr. Bundesen, senr., had his barn 2 feet under water, and he lost 6 tons of hay in stacks, 8 acres of growing maize, and 2 acres of lucerne.
Mr. Haden?s house was 11 feet under water, causing him to move to a new house a little higher on Friday, but next morning he and his large family had again to shift, this time to his barn, situated in safety on a high ridge. Mr. Haden lost 20 acres of maize, 2 acres of lucerne, half an acre of potatoes, and 6 tons of hay in stack.
Mr. Jeppesen, the well-known cigar maker and tobacco grower, next claims attention. His house was above flood level, but his barns were flooded, destroying seven bags of seed potatoes and half-a-ton of newly cut tobacco. He also lost 80 acres of growing maize, one acre of tobacco, and 1 acre of lucerne. The farms heree are on a rich alluvial flat, but dangerously low, hence as far as the eye can stretch the fields wear an aspect of utter desolution, every vestige of vegetation and every fence having disappeared.
Mr. Bundesen, Junr., had his house, barn and out buildings all under water, and had to clear to Jeppesen?s; his furniture bedding and clothing getting badly damaged, He lost 15 acres of standing maize, and a large quantity of seed wheat destroyed in his barn.
Mr. Sorensen?s house and barn were also flooded, severely damaging their contents. He lost 6 bags of seed wheat, 7 bags potatoes, 10 bags maize, 10 tons of hay and 15 acres of growing corn, and to complete his troubles had to clear hastily, with his family, to the school, where Mr. and Mrs, Wagner did all in their power to make them comfortable.
In trying to make my way to Mr. Wade?s, I should either have got drowned by taking the road, I was improperly advised to follow, or have been compelled to camp out all night in the rain, but, fortunately, just before darkness set in I met Mr. Wagner, who most generously turned back, and guided me over what is known as the Mountain road, a circuitous route, but which beaded many dangerous gullies, until after a long ride over boulders and through swamps we came in sight of Mr. Wade?s lights in the fine house he has recently erected, when Mr. Wagner bid me good-bye and wended his way home, leaving me his debtor for an act of generous kindness never to be forgotten. It need scarcely be added that I was most cordially entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Wade, who had just returned from Pialba, where they bad been on a visit during the worst of the flood, but returned to find their daughters safe at the bouse of Mr. Wagner, where their brothers had conveyed them when tbe flood got dangerously near the house. Mr. Wade?s house was only a foot above the higest level, and had it risen as much more would have placed his house in a dangerous position, quite isolated, and in a strong current. He has lost half ton of seed potatoes, 6 acres of maize, 20 tons of pumpkins, 1 acre lucerne, a ton of salt, 8 acres sets of harness, and about 160 choice fowls. He bad just broken up 4 aores of rich land from which the strong current has completely washed away the soil.

TUARANGI HOME
A WELL-MANAGED INSTITUTION
Yesterday afternoon a "Guardian" reporter paid a visit to the Tuarangi Old Men's Home. Mr Knight (or, rather, Sergeant Knight), the Master of the Home, conducted the visitor through the .building, and showed him the various wards, etc. The reporter was impressed with the cleanliness of the place, and the evidence of capable management; The three wards ?all of which ''accommodate a different. class of men, according to their infirmity?are well kept. Beds are placed down, each side of a ward, with about six feet or more between each bod, so that every man has plenty of room. Beside each bed there is a locker, in which its owner is allowed to keep what he likes. "I've got something to tell you about these lockers," said Mr Knight. "Some time ago they used to be nailed on to the walls, or placed on boxes or old chairs, and this made the ward look untidy. At that time there was an inmate who was a good carpenter, so, with the sanction of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, I got him to make a stand for every locker." The stands fill a dual capacity, as when the locker is placed on it there is also enough room for a man to, sit on. The inmates of two wards make their own beds, but in the other ward the men are more or less helpless, and their beds are made by one of the attendants. The kitchen was very neat and clean, and one old man was busy cutting bread with a. machine, for tea. On the range there was a big boiler full, of porridge, which is always cooked for five hours, to.insure it being easily digested. The hospital ward is kept scrupulouslyl clean and at present time the nurses: have plenty of work. The garden was then visited, and here a number of old men were seen enjoying the fresh air and sunlight. The garden i»s in .firstclass order.
"I suppose you grow enough vegetables to supply the home?" asked the reporter. "Oh, yes," replied Mr Knight; "with the exception of potatoes, because the ground is too light to grow them in any quantities:."
Speaking of the number of inmates in the Home, Mr Knight said that when he, took charge in 1911 there were only about 60 men there, but now the number had grown to 102, the maximum number that could be token in being. 108. Mr Knight paid a. tribute to.the good work, being done by the attendants and nurses.
Much credit is also due to Mr and Mrs Knight, especially the latter, who has had charge of the Home from soon after the outbreak of the war.
Mr Knight informed the reporter that more gramaphone records were wanted, as those he has are very old ones, and the men have heard them so often. At the present time, the gramaphone being used belongs to an Ashburton resident, who lent it to cheer the men up during Christmas and New Year.
The visit to the Home provided quite a, revelation to the reporter, who was impressed with the peaceful and contented life led by the old men, many of whom, no doubt, hasve interesting histories.

IMMIGRANTS BY THE FRIEDEBURG.
The first shipment of immigrants direct from Germany arrived in Port Lyttelton on Saturday last. The fine iron ship Friedeburg, Captain Kopper, made the passage from Hamburg in 102 days, and it is very satisfactory to , report that the immigrants have arrived at their destination in excellent health and spirits.
The ship was signalled outside the heads on Friday afternoon, but the name of the vessel could notc be ascertained until the following day. This fact suggests the urgent necessity that exists for the establishment of telegraphic communication between the Godley Head lighthouse, the signal station, and the telegraph offico in Lyttelton. The expense would not be very great, in fact it would appear as trifling contrasted withh the utility of the work. The lighthouse-keeper could soon be instructed in the art, so that the names of vessels could be telegraphed to Lyttelton and Christchurch immediately upon the signals being made out.
His Honor the Deputy-Superintendent, Mr J. E. March (Chief Immigration Officer), Dr Haast, Mr Ruddenklau, and Mr Monson left Christchurch for Lyttelton by the half-past eight o'clock train. Messrs Ruddenklau and Monson proceeded to port in the capacity of interpreters ? the former as between the Government officials and the German immigrants, and the latter as interpreter between the officials and the Danes and Norwegians. Tho party was joined in Lyttelton by Drs Donald and Rouse and Captain Gibson, who, together with Mr March, are tho Immigration Commissioners for the province. The s.s. Gazello, Capt McLellan, was chartered to take the party to the vessel. The Gazelle started about 10 o'clock, taking the Ben Moro in tow, but some delay was occasioned through the barque getting fast on a bank, which has formed a short distance from the wharf. As soon as she was got off, she was towed to the middle of the stream and left there, and the Gazelle proceeded to the ship, which was lying at anchor two miles outside the North Head. On approaching the vessel, the flag flying at the stern bespoke her country, and there was no longer any doubt as to her being the Freideburg. Drawing nearer the immigrants were mounted on the bulwarks of the ship anxiously awaiting our arrival, and the chorus of a cluster of single women on the pocp settled the point as to their nationality. Seen from the deck of the Gazelle, the large group of immigrants presented a somewhat novel spectacle. Three or four nations were there represented ? the G«rmanic,t heGennanic Polish, tho Norwegian, and the Danish, all chattering away in the language and dialects of their respective countries. Dr Donald, as Health Officer, was the first to go on board, and as all was well, the whole party followed .shortly afterwards. The immigrants were in the veiy best of spirits, and spoke hopefully of the future in their adopted home. Unfortunately, not one of them could speak English, and they expressed a considerable amount of anxiety in consequence, but they were in a great measure consoled when told that there were several of their countrymen in the province, and that they would soon be able to pick up the language in a country where English was universally spoken. Among the immigrants there aro some who have won decorations for services in the field. One has been in the Holstein, Austrian, and Franco- German wars, and another in tho two latter campaigns.
The usual official inspection by the Immigration Commissioners was commenced shortly after going on board. Beginning with the single women's compartment, the muster roll was called over, and the girls were asked (through tho interpreters) whether they had any complaints to make. . Their general reply was that they had been well treated during the voyage. In the married couples' compartment, every, head of a family was asked separately if he had anything to complain of. In the majority of cases tho reply was a negative one, but there were a few who complained of the quality of the water and the insufficiency of diet served out to them. Dr Temple was asked to express his opinion with reference to tho dietary scale, and he said he thought the quantities of some of the items were too small. Amongst the married couples, one immigrant was pointed out as having walked from the Russian frontier to Hamburg (a distance of about 800 miles) with his wife and five or six children, sleeping at farm houses and oftentimes in the open air on their way to join the ship. It was a curious fact, that while those on one side of the vessel (Polish-Germans) complained about the insufficiency of food ; those on tho opposite side (Norwegians and Danes) expressed entire satisfaction. The former were asked how they could account for this, and their reply was that the latter were richer than themselves, and besides bringing more comforts with them, had money onough to enable them to procure what they wanted. The same thing, however, was noticeable in the single men's compartment ; here tho Danes and Norwegians were perfectly satisfied with their treatment on board, while a few of the Germans and Polish-Germans complained of the quality of the water and the insufficiency of the dietary scale. The captain and doctor speak very highly of the conduct of the Norwegians and Danes and most of his own countrymen during the voyage from Hamburg. We were pleased to observe the cleanliness of the ship in every part, and it is doubtless owing to the care taken in this respect that the health of the passengers has been so successfully maintained.
Speaking of the immigrants as a whole, they are undoubtedly a very good selection, and if they follow the excellent advice given to them by the two interpreters, they will have no reason to regret coming to New Zealand. Their ignorance of English will doubtless be a considerable disadvantage to them for some time, but they will not be long in acquiring a sufficient knowledge of the language to enable them to get along comfortably with those by whom they may be employed. It is probable that many of them will find employment from their own countrymen.
The Friedeburg sailed from Hamburg on the 18th of May, having on board 292 persons, representing 241 adults. On the voyage over, there was one death ? a child 11 months old ? and six births, thus increasing the number of souls to 297. Of this number 200 are above 12 years old, 82 are between 1 and 12 years, and 15 under 1 year. There are 61 single women, 33 single men, 53 married couples, and 97 children and infants, including the six born on the passage. With regard to nationalities, the numbers are as follows : ? Germans (including Polish), 102 persons above 12 years, 68 children and 5 infants ; Norwegians, 51 persons above 12 years, 5 children, and 3 infants ; Danes, 47 persons above 12 years, 9 children, aud 2 infants. This total of 10 infants does not include those born since the sailing of the ship. The ship is admirably adapted for the conveyance of immigrants, and is superior in many respects to the vessels that come from London. The height between decks is 8ft and 8ft (lin, the ventilation is good, but there is an insufficiency of light in all the compartments. Captain E. Kopper has made one trip to Queensland in the Friedeburg with 300 immigrants, and he is highly spoken of by those who have now reached Canterbury under his charge. The surgeon-superintendent, Dr D L. Temple, who speaks German very fluently and Danish moderately well, deserves to be complimented upon the healthy condition in which so many persons have reached their destination.
The immigrants will disembark after noon today, and will be conveyed by special train to Addington. The Barracks will be open to employers on Thursday. We are informed that at the Immigration Barracks no fewer than 90 applications for domestic servants have been received. Mr March has remained on board the ship smce Saturday, and will not leave until the disembarkation is completed. Messrs Ruddenklau and Morrison will act as interpreters during the stay of the immigrants at the Barracks

The Kawarau Gorge is a major river gorge, located in Central Otago, in the South Island of New Zealand. The Kawarau River flows through the gorge, which is located between the towns of Queenstown and Cromwell, and part of the route of State Highway 6 also follows the gorge.[1]
The gorge begins some 30 kilometres from Queenstown, close to the wine-growing community of Gibbston and the large rock outcrop known as the Nevis Bluff. It continues for some 25 kilometres before the river emerges into the upper valley of the Clutha River close to the settlement of Ripponvale. The Roaring Meg hydro scheme and Goldfields Mining Centre are in the gorge

The effects of the late flood on the land along the river bank, are continually cropping up (says the Maryborough Chronicle) in the way of landslips, whereby the owner of the land is often deprived of a considerable portion of his holding. The last of these slips last week, when Mr Jones, of Yengerie, lost a well - laid - out vegetable garden situated on Myrtle Creek, the land going bodily into the creek. another effect of the flood was to bury farm implements to a great depth.
Mr P.P. Bundesen of Gootchie recovered one of his scarifiers 30 ft below the surface. This farmer lost a considerable poition of his land some 15 acres, while a great portion of the remainder was covered with soil of a sandy nature fiom 10ft to 30ft in depth.

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
October 24
One could hardly expect to meet with much enthusiasm in this quiet unpretentious corner; but the ball held in Mr. P. P. Bundesen's spacious barn was a pleasant surprise to those who have been hibernating for some time. It was in celebration of the winding up for the season of our dancing assembly that this excellent display was made. The votaries of Terpsichore to the number of 27 couples faced the music, and were piloted by Mr. C. Andersen, of Miva, a very genial and affable M. C., to whom many of the young people of this locality can be grateful for their improved deportment. Musicians seemed numerous, and much praise is due to those who entertained us with acordians, picolo,(A. P. Olson), violin (A. Slmpion), and concertina. Refreshments with concomitant comestibles were handed round at very short intervals during the night, thanks to the assiduity of Mesdames. P. Bundesen, Jossen, and Birt, through whose efforts at the commissirait we fared sumptuously. During respite, humorous and sentimental songs were contributed extempore by Mises M. Bundesen, Anderson, Messrs. Bradshaw, Sheehan, Wagner, Payne, Simpson, and others. Messrs. Dradtbaw, Simpson, and Payee sang in character, the last two as niggers. Mr. Bradshaw by comicolalities fairly brought down the house, and had to respond to several encores.

[From our own correspondent]
On the 3rd of January we had a heavy thunderstorm with rain and heavy hailstones. The ground was almost covered with hailstones, which did a great deal ot damage to all the young corn. It was stripped as if It had been done with forks. Not a single leaf of tobacco is left sound. It is all cut into holes and rags. The laat couple of days the weather has been fine. The atmosphere still keeps hot, and heavy cloud, hanging about.
The hailstorm did not do much damage to the early crops as it is almost all ready to pull, which the farmers ought to be thankful for.
It is time for the farmers, to prepare land for wheat and potatoes, and also for the farmers to lookout for some good seed wheat. I think that it would be a wise thing for the farmers to send to Victoria for seed. I intend to send for Talavera and Purple Staw.

A pleasant gathering in the shape of a surprise party took place at Mr and Mrs Bundesen's residence on Wednesday last, when the people (both young and old) gathered from all round the district to say good-bye to Mr and Mrs Bundesen. While the billy was boiling the people indulged in games on the grass, and after a substantial lunch had been partaken of, Mr and Mrs Bundesen were presented with a beautiful silver coffee pot. Mr Thompson, in making the presentation, said he had been asked to perform a duty that day which was by no means a pleasant one, as it menat parting with two old friends, and parting with friends was always hard; but such was the way of life - the best of friends would have to part sooner or later. And, on behalf of all Deborah people, he wished them good-bye, and in their new home long life, good health and happiness and prosperity. He then made the presentation to Mrs Bundesen, and said he wanted her to make coffee in it every day, and while they were drinking the coffee, the pot would remind them of the friends they had left behind.
When Mr Bundesen rose to reply, the old gentleman was visibly affected. He thanked their many friends very much for the kind regards, and said they felt the parting very much.
Games were again played till evening, when another lunch was partaken of, and the young people wound up with a dance in the barn till 12 o'clock.
Mr and Mrs Bundesen came to Queensland with their young family from New Zealand about 32 years ago, and have resided here ever since, their occupation being farming and dairying. The family are all married and living elsewhere. Mr and Mrs Bundesen go to Pialba, where they will live a quiet, retired life for the future.

The many friends of Mr Peter Petersen Bundesen will be grieved to hear of his death, which took place at St. Mary's Hospital last evening. The deceased, who was a very old and highly respected resident pioneer of the district , was a native of Denmark, whence he left for New Zealand in the year 1861. After sojourning in that country for some 22 years, he travelled across to Queensland, and took up his residence at Netherby, near Tiaro, where he had followed the farming industry until a couple of months ago, when he retired and, with his wife, went to live at Pialba, his was a disposition that gained many friends, and his end, though it was not entirely unexpected; nevertherless will be sincerely mourned.
Desceased was in his 76th. year. He leaves behind a widow , three daughters and one son to mourn their loss, namely Mesdames F. Jessen ( Coolabunia), E Jensen (Pialba), W Merrin (Gympie), and Mr. Peter H. Bundesen ( Tinana), to whom the hand of sympathy is extended in their hour of tribulation. The body will be conveyed to Nikenbah by rail this morning, and the funeral will leave, on the arrival of the train, for the Danish Chapel Cemetery at that place.

Hokitika is a small town in the West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island, 40 kilometres (25 mi) south of Greymouth, and close to the mouth of the Hokitika River.
Founded on gold mining in 1864, it was a centre of the West Coast Gold Rush. By late 1866, it was one of New Zealand's most populous centres. On 16 September 1867, there were 41 vessels alongside the wharf at Hokitika, in some places three and four deep. In 1867, the port of Hokitika ranked first in New Zealand in both the number of vessels entered inwards and in the total value of exports; principally gold.

Had he asked us well we know
We should cry, O spare this blow;
Yes, with streaming eyes should pray
Lord, we love him, let him stay.

And since he has ordered this,
We have naught to do but still
Rest in silence on His will
